Top 10 Reasons to Buy an Electric Scooter

Top 10 Reasons to Buy an Electric Scooter

I have recently taken the plough and got myself an electric scooter to avoid my current daily commute in Beijing, which was starting to annoy me due to the sheer number of people that use the bus and subways during the weekdays. Electric scooters (e-scooters) and electric bikes (e-bikes) are pretty common in Beijing because they are reasonably cheap to buy and maintain. And with so many cars in the city of Beijing, having an e-scooter or e-bike to waive in and out of traffic makes sense. Here are top ten reasons to buy an electric scooter or electric bike:

1. Avoid the overcrowded buses and subways at peak times.
2. Save money on taxi rides.
3. More convenient and faster than travelling in a car.
4. More freedom to explore undiscovered parts of Beijing that you didn’t know existed.
5. Cheap to buy and maintain.
6. Better for the environment as it emits no pollution and is silent.
7. You don’t require a license to operate an electric bike or electric scooter as it’s classed like a normal bicycle.
8. You don’t need to pay any additional taxes or insurance to own an electric bike or electric scooter.
9. Your sense of direction will improve.
10. Easier to park in a city with so many cars.

When I decided to go electric, the next thing was to decide whether to go for a bike or scooter style.  I opted for the scooter style because it looked better than a conventional bike and had bigger batteries, which enabled you to travel more miles.

The e-scooter I went for was an AiMa (爱马) branded bike, which I brought 2nd hand for 1800RMB. I think the brand new price was 3400RMB. I figured there was no point buying brand new considering it would cost me twice as much money and will get bumped and scratched a lot at some point. Minus the heart stickers, my bike is exactly as the same as the picture below.

The specifications of my AiMa bike are as follows:

  • Top Speed: 35KMH (21.7MPH)
  • Range: <60KM (37.2miles) to be tested.
  • Batteries: Not sure
  • Battery weight: 2x13kg
  • Charging time: <8 hours

I’ve had my e-scooter for about a week now and so far enjoying the freedom and experience of riding it in a busy city. I’m enjoying it so much that I wonder why I didn’t buy an e-scooter sooner. So if you are considering buying an electric scooter or electric bike, I would highly recommended you do because you will learn more about the city you are in and come to love the joy of riding again. Here’s a good buyers guide if you are looking to buy a bike in Beijing.
